According to John Snowden,
"I started an Instagram page on April 13th, 2016, a little over a year
ago. Within a year I had 80k followers (not one follower has been
bought), and as of today’s date I'm at 99k. The truth is, a lot of the
reports you hear about big IG page earnings simply aren't true. The
numbers are beefed up by people who:
- In theory, try to estimate how much a page should be earning based on followers/impressions
- Those who work with/for influencers. They paint the picture that what one or two pages are making is the norm. But as with almost everything in life, it's never that simple or easy.
I've seen an answer on here claiming that you can make up to $250 per post with 50k followers. Ha. If only that were true!
I’m
friends with around 50 other pages, ranging from 20k - 600k followers.
We form IG groups to bounce ideas and help each other make more money.
So here I'll pass on our experience and the truth about how much 99% of
“big” pages really make, and what it will take to make the big bucks on Instagram.
Firstly,
your page needs to have a good engagement-to-follower ratio. 500k pages
with only 5k likes are ten a penny. The owners of those pages have
clearly bought followers to make their brand seem bigger than it really
is. You should aim for at least one like per 10 followers. So:
100 followers = 10 likes
1000 followers = 100 likes
100k followers = 10, 000 likes. Im almost at 100k and get a minimum of 15k likes per post and often get between 20 - 35k.
The
bigger your page gets, the lower your ratio gets. So a page with 1
million real followers, although expected to get 100k likes per post,
will probably get between 40 - 80k likes. There’s a reason for this but
perhaps I'll explain that in another answer (if someone asks).
My
point is, without gaining followers the long and proper way (through
good content), you have no chance of making good money on Instagram.
Influencers and those seeking promotions pay attention to the ratio and
will not pay you if it's clear your page is inflated with fake bot
accounts.
Now in terms of how much you can
make, in one year I made roughly $500. The truth is that you don't get
requests from influencers all that often. Maybe once or twice a month.
At 60/70k followers they only wanted to pay about $15 per post. When I
reach 100k followers I will put my prices up significantly, but if it's
too high they will simply get their promotions from another page.
During
year two, as I go from 100k to 200k, My goal is to make between $1k -
$2k. It pays a few bills. To get to a point where you can quit your job,
you'll need roughly 500k followers minimum, with real followers and
good engagement. Lots of comments and likes. You'd also need some kind
of business plan and not just wait for people to get in touch with
promotional requests.
Advertise and sell your
own merchandise. Thats why big fashion pages make the most money on
Instagram. They make money from promos and influencers, yes, but they
also sell their own products or they become an affiliate and get
commission for every sale that is made via someone following their link.
And
finally, my biggest advice would be to make a website. That's where the
money is, not within the walls of Instagram. On Instagram you have to
work long and hard to make pittance. For 99% of pages, it's only when
you get to 500k - 1m+ followers that a page can turn into an automatic
money making machine.
I get 2.7 million
impressions on my Instagram page a week. If I were getting that many
visitors to a website, I'd be doing snow angels in a pile of cash!.
Ok
maybe an exaggeration, but I would have quit my day job at least. If
you're already growing an IG page, stick with it. But if you're
considering joining Instagram with the intention of making money, it’s
better to use your time and energy to create a business plan around an
idea you have, and then build a site".
