In an experiment run by Giovanni Caputo volunteers who stared into each other's eyes for 10 minutes began to experience an altered state of conciousness. 90% of the volunteers began to hallucinate changes in the face of their staring partner ranging from monstrous deformities to beginning to look like relatives.
This study was a follow up to one where subjects were asked to stare at their own eyes in a mirror. That study had similar results also.
